Venue Comments

The Glenelg Animated Picture Company had been operating at Glenelg since 1910 at the town hall. When one of the directors built the Cafe Rendezvous on Mosely Square in 1913, the company built an open-air theatre at the rear. By 1916, the company had monopolised screenings at Glenelg having bought out their opposition, Mack's Open Air Theatre. The same year the company purchased a block of land on Althorpe Place on which they built the Glenelg Theatre, the last picture house to be built during the First World War. (An amendment to the War Precautions Companies Regulations prevented the erection of any building or structure for amusement purposes.) The picture house cost 10,000 pounds to build.
